Yoga and Ayurveda

General information

Yoga and Ayurveda are both traditional systems of health promotion from ancient India.

In Yoga, the goal is spiritual growth for which health is a prerequisite. Yoga deals with the management of the mind. It explains how we can increase our mental balance and clarity by removing our tendency to enter states causing imbalance through their qualities (trigunas).

In Ayurveda, the primary emphasis is on promoting health, preventing pathology, and restoring health. For this, it uses the model of the 5 elements and 3 doshas. It explains how food and the environment affect the qualities and functions of our bodies.

The relation between the 5 elements and the Human Body

The foundations of Ayurveda are settled on the principle that the universe is composed of five elements. The same elements that exist in the

Cosmos, exist in the human body.

These 5 elements are known as Pancha Mahabhutas: Eter (space); Air; Fire; Water and Earth.

Each one of these five entities is a physical constituent of our world. Each has several qualities and functions. Together, they span a wide range of qualities, from hot to cold, dry to wet, light to heavy, hard to soft, and so on.

Ayurveda teaches us to cherish our innate-nature, to love and honor who we are, not as what people think or tell us, who we should be.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda means the science of life. It’s an ancient Indian science that sees the human being made of a body, a mind and a soul with an holistic approach. Ayurveda defends the 5 elements, Pancha Maha Bhutan, concept, something that exists since ever and goes beyond time and space itself. It says that all these 5 elements are present in nature and we, being nature, have them within ourselves too.

We are made of earth, water, fire, air and space. We are humans and beings of this world because we are built from it and together with it.

Nature as its own way of expressing itself through these 5 elements and we can, too, be part of that unique expression. We are not part of nature; we are nature itself. Ayurveda believes in complete healing from the very roots of the disease based on the ‘Prakriti’ of the individual. It uses natural ingredients first to detoxify the body using ‘Panchkarma,’ and then treat the cause of the disease. Healing from the roots is the main aim of this practice. An Ayurveda Retreat is just the place for experiencing this year-old traditional system of healing.

When you come to an Ayurveda Retreat, you come there to experience nature and remove all bodily toxins to purify and heal from within. Since Ayurveda uses natural ingredients, there are no side effects of the treatment. Ayurveda Retreats are most beneficial for people who have

chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, obesity, blood pressure, etc.

The history of ayurveda

From sanskrit, ayurveda means “the science of life” (ayur – life and veda – knowledge / science). Created Over 5000 years ago, it is one of the most ancient health systems. The secret of this method of individual cure was preserved in India, while lost or replaced in other cultures. It is a holistic medical system that recognizes the person as a connected body, mind, and soul.

Ayurveda is one of few indigenous sciencesthat are still used in today’s world, although it was banned from India during the colonization period. Currently its use is growing and its starting again to be seen as a credible approach for health and well-being in the western world.

The 5 elements

The basis of the theory is not that there are five elements or forms of matter that make up the world, each having the listed qualities.

Rather, the world has qualities and functions that we group under these five categories, for convenience.

The qualities of these elements can be experienced daily in our physical, mental, and emotional being and can be identified through their qualities like the freshness and dryness of the air, the heat and light of fire, the humidity of water or the stability of earth.

These qualities are present in everything, in the body, in food, in our activities, in the environment and seasons. Having problems in the relationship with the elements we are going to feel disturbances in our body, creating several health issues.
